Hello,

this was for me a challenging mix. But in the end a lightbulb went on. Parallel Drum Compression is king

The raw files were excellent, but the kick drum sounded crappy...

Did you use the original mix as a reference track? Because if you did you would hear for yourself that you are doing too much, trying too hard. It's a simple metal song with a bon-jovi-turns-into-black-metal-Part in the middle. There is no need to compress the shit out of everything, especially the snare Every time the snare hits it feels like a crack with the whip The drums are WAY too powerful and dominating this mix from start to end. Even when EVERYTHING is supposed to calm DOWN and the singer goes full Bon Jovi your snare is still hitting like a truck.

Sounds great, apart from it being a little harsh. Try to back off a bit of the high end on the mix.

Maybe use less compression as well.
