tucks No-EQ-allowed mix
#1
Hi,
I put myself the challenge to not use EQ in this mix (even no hi-passing anywhere - and except for some Ozone Auto-Mastering on the Master-Box, which did some very minor EQ adjustments). Very difficult to reach your goals with other plugins and I'm not satisfied with some parts of the mix because of that, but on the other hand I'm surprised what tricks worked out. Mainly I used my "Distortion"-Plugins to reach the desired sound.

The whole project only has the following Effects:
- True Iron on the Kick Drum
- Transient Designer and Aphex Exciter on the Snare
- True Iron and Scheps OmniChannel (Distortion and Compression) on the Bass
- Ozone on the Master Bus

So most of the work in the mix was automation to set the focus for the instruments, because I could not kill the disturbing frequencies using equalizers...

I'm excited about any feedback..
Best Regards Tobias

I'm not sure I understand why you decide to do no filtering. Proximity effect alone (which in a live environment provides for greater potential gain before feedback (PAG/NAG) needs to be compensated for. As a result I think the mix sounds too thick in the area where proximity effect is most prevalent. The balance of the instruments is fine but for the overwhelming thickness.

I think creativity comes from restrictions you have, even if they are created arbitrarily. I wanted to know, how far I can get for learning purposes... Of course I‘m aware that the mix is „on the warm side“ Angel

Can you share what you have learned?

Hey Tucks ,
I like your Idea , I usually get a rough balance of all tracks then eq the master bus to get the mix to translate on my monitors and then do some eq and compression on the individual tracks.
listening to your latest version I eqed your mix to my taste on my monitors maybe the vocals could be tamed around the 180 hz easily sorted with a dynamic eq.
This is another one I have to remix .
Nice work Big Grin
