The Penniless Wild: Seat Back
#2
Hi DW,

Nice take on this cool track. I like how you have worked with, and emphasised where needed, the natural build through the song. I also like the forwardness of the drums throughout. I think perhaps, your issue with the drums moving into the solo maybe with the snare. If you can give it some impact when it emerges this will give the lift and "life" you could be looking for. As it is, the snare is just too buried.

Now I also reckon you could give the primary guitar a more solid foundation. Some extra weight, slight softening and rounding off would work well. I feel it's roll needs to be firm and consistent from start to finish, but still relaxed. Be careful of that second guitar part when it appears, as it tends to overshadow the first which for me anyway, tends to upset the rhythmic movement of the song that the arpeggio part provides. Try balancing these parts at a low volume making sure the arpeggio part holds it own.

I think you have handled the vocal pretty well. I don't mind the way it was recorded. I gives it quite an intimate raw feel. How to deal with the short comings of this, well that's subjective. Also I agree with your approach to the keys. Adding quite a bit "dirt" was something I also went with in filling out the mix.

A lot of these thoughts are subjective I know, but I hope you find them helpful.

Dave
