Freeze tracks when you can. You can always come back and unfreeze if you need to fix something. Best way to get CPU cycles back. Also, if a wav file isn't totally silent in silent passages, this will also chew cycles since it still has to go through all the plugins. Trip your clips or "strip silence" if you reasonably can and that can also gain you some oomph back.
