Yeah, I deliberately had less kick and snare than I normally would. There's a bit around 20 mins in where I turn up the kick and say "it's not that kind of song" ... As far as I recall there was no EQ or compression on the kick. The snare has a little bit of compression and the drum bus has a fairly typical 4dB gain reduction or so. I think the drum performance is what's a bit flat -- I'd probably automate the 3 snare mics in order to get a variety of sounds over the song.

I've always noticed I mix vocals quieter than average, especially towards the end of a song. The justification is, that since you've already heard the lyrics and melody before, that its ok for some of the instruments to come up a bit at the expense of some vocal masking. Your brain fills in the gaps because it's familiar with the lyrics and melody and so knows what to expect.

Yeah, definitely a few more things to do but tried to keep it under 2 hrs!
