My first mix - walrus hands - 23-08-2013

Just found this website and absolutely love it. Here is my first attempt.

Welcome here.
I think the basic balance is fine with your mix.

I'm quite sure that each instrument sounds good when soloed, but when they are together there's some problems. I feel the sound and the mood is coherent up to the point when electric guitar comes in (0:40). At that moment suddenly the overall sound feels little weird. Something is wrong with spatial issues. For example snare is very dry in small room, but electric guitar is far behind in a huge hall. That's totally possible and interesting concept for a mix, but I think you should tweak some small ambient details to make that concept work better.

When the female background vocals come in, male vocal starts to sound little bit closed. As you have placed male vocal very near to listener, articulation could be little clearer. Is that woman jumping from speaker to another? Something weird is happening in there.

The role of the piano in this mix is not clear to me. You bring up some fills here and there.

I hope you got some ideas to work with for your second version.

Cheers,
Olli
