Who I Am mix - John - BigJohn - 13-04-2015

I missed this one, but when I heard the guy's voice in the submitted mixes, I wanted to give it a try. All the tracks were performed and recorded so well that the "less is more" philosophy mostly seemed to work.

However I had a had a hard time separating out the different instruments. I counted 8 of them, not counting bass, drums or vox. This is my attempt to give them some space.

Let me know what you think.

Thanks, John

Nice job on the lead vocals. Nice and smooth ... maybe a bit too warm. I'd like some more presence, volume and width in the BGV.
Different approach to keep the drums clear until the chorus, but I'd have the kick and snare up a bit in volume when they come in.
On a second listen through, the drums are there but way down in volume.
Overall the sound lacks a little presence and air. I reckon a lot could be done by working on the kick, snare and hats.
Hope this helps ....Perry

Perry,

Thanks for the input. Trying to remember why I did what I did.
Upon re-listening, I guess that you are right about the BGV. My thought at the time was that I didn't want them competing with the lead vocal.

As for the drums, increasing their volume level as you suggest, would
result in a good mix. My thinking there was that "Who I Am" could be
interpreted as a country ballad vs. a country rocker. In that case,
I maybe could get away with a softer drum sound. Well, it was worth
a try, No?

Hi John.
Regarding the BGV, I cant remember what came in the source files, but I think I created doubles and panned them out.
Maybe it's not a volume thing, but I just like width and extra separation to the main vocal.

Being a drummer, I gotta watch myself on focusing too much on the kit.
I guess I'd heard it one way in my head, and then got stuck on that.
I took another listen with country ballad in mind, and your mix does work very well.
It's a great song, and definitely one on my play list.
